• Research data management refers to the practice of working with data for the duration of a project and beyond. As a student at RUC, it is important that you manage data responsibly in your projects – from the initial planning and collection of the data, to storing and sharing the data.
• Research data includes anything from interview transcripts, notes, audio and video recordings to survey data, sample data and statistics, etc. The type of data you collect for your projects at RUC often depends on your topic.
• Roskilde University (RUC) has a data management policy which provides guidelines to researchers and students to manage research data appropriately. According to the policy, "RUC students must be familiar with the basic principles for data management and must have access to RUC's facilities for the storage/sharing of data" (p. 4). To read the policy, please click here.
When you collect data involving human participants (if you conduct interviews, for example), it is necessary to obtain permission to process and handle personal data from the participants. To do this you need to use a consent form.
You should also familiarise yourself with EU's GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation). Click below (requires RUC login) to read more about GDPR and access the relevant consent forms. Note that there are two types of consent forms: one for general use (interviews, etc.), and one for recordings of sound, video or pictures.

Where you should upload your data depends on who you want to share the files with as well as the type of information they contain. Consult the RUC's guidelines above to find out where to save, store and/or share your files, incl. the data you have collected for your RUC projects. To access the document as pdf, click here.
Google Drive, DropBox and other public cloud servers must NOT be used for research data storage. This is particularly important to keep in mind if personal data are involved.
