Bibliometrics: Introduction

Introduction to bibliometrics

WHAT IS BIBLIOMETRICS?

Bibliometrics is a method of measuring and analyzing research output. Typically, it is based on metadata linked to research publications, e.g. publication- and citation counts.

The purpose of bibliometrics is to gain insight into research patterns, research quality and research impact, as well as the spread of research, in order to examine:

  • Academic impact
  • Social impact and engagement
  • Interdisciplinarity and collaboration

Metrics provide quantitative insight

To examine the patterns, quality and development of research publications, you can look at various metrics or indicators. For example:

  • Publication counts by year or by publication types, peer-review or Open Access
  • Citation overviews in relation to h-index, field-normalized citation impact or policy citations
  • Co-authorships distributed geographically or by institution type
  • Journal ranking in relation to 'impact factor' or other rankings
  • Distribution and dissemination via media coverage, downloads or UN Sustainable Development Goals
  • And much more!

However, it is important to remember that metrics and indicators never should stand alone as a measure of research impact and -quality.

What can you use bibliometricsĀ for?

As a researcher, you can use bibliometrics to:

  • Monitor your research (who cites or mentions you)
  • Find a journal to publish in
  • Identify potential business partners
  • Evaluate and benchmark research units

At RUC, we have various sources and tools available, that you can use to find bibliometric data or analyses. In the 'Bibliometric tools' section on this page you will find some of the key tools for you at RUC.

What can the library help you with?

The library can help you retrieve data from various sources and prepare bibliometric analyzes and reports.

We can also advise you on methods and the use of bibliometric tools, where we always emphasize the responsible use of metrics and data.
